The 1% in the Car Business

Being a 1%er in the Car Business

I find it fascinating that with all the experience and knowledge some teams fail to achieve being in the top in this industry.  What does it mean to be in the top 1% in the game of cars?  I’ve had a hard look as we have been able to peek into several dealerships performance in the past 90 days.  Some have it down and are on their way, while others just put their hands in the air and say, “it doesn’t work, or it’s too much work.”  What separates the top in the game?  It really comes down to 3 core things.

  1. Desire(Clear Vision) – without the desire or clear vision to execute a plan no one, or no team can win. This is vital, like the heartbeat for human survival.
  2. Team – The team has to be bought in and on the same page. There cannot be one person on the team that doesn’t believe it can work or it will fail.  Anytime I implement anything I have to have our whole team bought in and if there is any inclination that someone won’t be bought in I try to feather out the objection and get them sold on the idea.  If it doesn’t work I won’t do it.  I could just make them all do it, but it wouldn’t be as successful.
  3. Massive Action(Work)- This is easier said than done.  Unless the leader is engaged 100% no one will follow suit.  Everyone has to put in the work.  No one will come in and do the work for them.  I understand from a certain perspective, like anything, there will be a learning curve, but you have to be will to do the work.  Without the work you cannot reach the top of any mountain or goal.  It just doesn’t happen.  Most people fail because they underestimate how much work it really takes and give up before they can even start going.

If you’re not afraid to get your hands dirty and can get your team wrapped around your vision, you too can achieve being in the top of your game.  Do work!
