“When the going gets Tough, the Tough get going”

“When the going gets tough, the tough get going”

When things don’t seem to be going for you, in the direction you want… You only have 3 options.

1.    Go back to the basics

Go through make sure your processes are in place. When you look at things from a bird’s eye view you can quickly see you might be skipping a step. The basics of your business are the same, “The Fundamentals” of blocking and tackling. We’ve all heard the adage “inspect what you expect.” You must go further with this when things are a little tougher. It’s easy to look like a superstar when everyone is winning, but the real test is when the times aren’t as good.

2.   Make sure you cut the fat.

This is where you may have to let go of underperforming people even though you really care for them as individuals. When they are no longer performing to tolerable level, “average” then it’s time to move on. You must set clear expectations with your team and stick to them as their leader, even when you’ve grown fond of them.

3.   Start over.

This is the more drastic approach, but when the people no longer share the vision you may have to go in and start over. We’ve done this when taking over a store. The people didn’t see our vision and where things were going, so we had to start over. From an internal standpoint, we’ve never done this only when taking over a new or underperforming store. Usually you’ll find some of the leaders you’ve put in place either have been complacent or lost the vision somewhere along the lines. These people need to go or get recharged and remember why they’re in the position their in.

“When the going gets tough, the tough get going,” you’ll find sticking to this and just getting to work are all you really need to do.  This might mean you have to put in a little more time, but you can do it.
